American Sign Language is a visual language that is made by moving of the hands, combined with facial expressions and postures of the body. It is a primary language that is used for those who are deaf and hard of hearing.
Language Benefits
Sign language is not only a great way for DHH and CODA children to communicate, but it also benefits all children. It has been proven that learning sign language when the child has a speech delay, aids the child’s speech development. Most babies who sign, speak earlier than babies who do not learn sign language.
Studies show that children using sign language have better language skills and higher IQ’s! Infants and toddlers that learn sign language also gain psychological benefits, such as improved confidence and self esteem. Often when a child is feeling angry, it is due to inability to communicate. Learning sign language lessens the tantrums and gives the child the ability to communicate when the child is too flustered to speak clearly.
